Chicago’s Jay Cutler to have Surgery Miss Rest of Season, Giants are Pathetic in Loss to Eagles

The surging Bears learned today that Jay Cutler has a broken thumb and it’s possible that he will miss the remainder of the season. It’s a tough break, the Bears had really started to play well. With the Lions having to play the Packers two more times this year, the Buccaneers struggling and the N.F.C. East becoming the Cowboys division to lose, the Bears seemed like a lock for the playoffs. This could derail their season.

update: Apparently he is to miss six to 8 weeks, this is week 11. This means he is out for the regular season at the least, and could be back for the playoffs.

The Giants lost on Sunday night to the Philadelphia Eagles in one of the worst displays of offense in the first half of the game football fans have seen all season. Eli Manning couldn’t get three seconds to throw the ball, and the Giants run game was anemic. It was so poor that Coughlin described it as “pathetic” in his post-game news conference. The Giants had a shot to deal the final blow to the Eagles on Sunday, but instead came out flat and couldn’t block one of the worst defenses in the league, and despite three Vince Young interceptions the Giants offense couldn’t get anything going.

Again the Giants offense came alive thanks to some huge plays by Eli Manning, Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz in the fourth quarter, but it was too little too late and Eli Manning was sacked from behind to end the game as he fumbled the  ball away. The Giants defense then gave up a huge 60 yard run to LeSean McCoy to seal the Giants fate, leaving the Giants to wonder about the curse of November. Can they bounce back and finish the season strong?

The Giants now have their next three games at New Orleans, with the packes, and at Dallas and are in serious jeopardy of having another late season collapse and missing the playoffs.

There were some bright spots. Prince Amukmara had an interception, and Mark Herzlich really played well for the most part and showed more promise in his one game than Greg Jones has all season. Herzlich was at least involved in the action. The vaunted pass rush couldn’t take advantage of the Eagles supposedly porous offensive line. Really, the Eagles dominated both lines of scrimmage today and it’s why they won the game and have stayed off elimination for at least one week, if not more. If the Eagles run the table they will make the playoffs.
