Pros

Just a physically gifted and imposing athlete (huge for a safety and has good speed)…big time hitter…good tackler…Could excel at covering tight ends because of his physicality, height, and speed…Makes plays in the run game…has a lot of experience

cons:

Needs to improve in his  coverage…recruited as an athlete and still learning the position (ie doesn’t have great instincts)… Needs to make more plays on the football…Not as stiff as Say, Taylor Mays, but not an extremely fluid safety…Is having a difficult time getting on the field (inappropriate meetings and what not)

player comparison: Adrian Wilson, SS, Arizona Cardinals

When you’re making player comparisons you usually try to go best case scenario. So a player plays like this kind of player or has this kind of players unique abilities, will Ray Ray Armstrong become Adrian Wilson? Perhaps not, but he has the same kind of uncommon size speed and physical ability. Armstrong also makes more plays and is better in pass coverage than Taylor Mays (that’s not saying much). Wilson is listed at 6’3 230 pounds and is an athletic freak and really cn lay the big hits, that in a nutshell, is Armstrong.

Round projection: 4th

Thoughts

Armstrong has unique physical ability. He is a better prospect than Taylor Mays is because he is a better player. The thing that is most intriguing about Armstrong is his size and with his size and athleticism he should be able to cover tight ends at a level that many safeties just can’t do. Tight Ends are not a huge matchup problems than Armstrong, but armstrong is a strong safety and those kinds of players are devalued because they are not asked to make a lot of plays on the football. What will also hurt Armstrong’s stock is the fact that he is being investigated for inappropriate conduct with a P.R. firm currently and was suspended earlier in the year because he accepted extra benefits. Both will hurt his draft stock as will his ability to play pass coverage against quicker, faster wide recievers.

NFLMocks preseason bio

Excellent tackler at the safety position who makes plays all over the field. Big hitter who is considered a potential first round prospect by many NFL Draft outlets. He is certainly physically imposing and came to Miami as a highly touted prospect considered an “athlete” and clearly they chose the right spot for him. He really broke out as a sophomore with 79 tackles and three interceptions, one returned for a touchdown. Armstrong is very, very talented and has great potential as an NFL player. He is pretty much a consensus first team All-ACC heading into the 2011 season, and was second team All-ACC last year despite starting only four games. He should be one of the top safeties on most draft boards heading into the season.
