Michigan State Beats Wisconsin On controversial Last Second Hail Mary Touchdown Pass

Wisconsin Quarterback Russel Wilson has really had a stellar season, but he let their undefeated season come to an end on Saturday night as he wasn’t able to overcome some mental mistakes and a fluky game ending touchdown pass from Kirk Cousins. Wilson, the rest of the badgers, and Big 10 nation  watched in horror as Michigan State caught a last second Hail Mary Touchdown pass that was knocked down by Wisconsin right into the hands of Keith Nichol who fought forward for the final yard. The play was originally ruled no touchdown, and then it went to review and it was overturned to a touchdown. The replay was difficult because the camera angles we were seeing at home were shaking, though it looked like it might be the right call. Was the evidence indisputable? That’s where the controversy begins.

Throughout the game Wilson missed a few open wide receivers as he didn’t make great reads and was a little careless with the football. Wilson throw two interceptions and also fumbled a ball while scrambling which luckily bounced out of bounds. Wilson also made a bad decision when he didn’t get outside the tackle box to throw the ball away costing the Badgers a safety.

Wilson did what winners do and drove his team down the field at the end of the game with an excellent drive where he completed all four passes he attempted before dumping off a pass to Motee ball for a touchdown. A tough break for a poised player with a big time arm. You just had the feeling that when the game went to overtime Wisconsin was going to win.

Wilson is a good player and I’m not giving up on him as a prospect or anything, he still has a good arm and good mobility, though tonight he didn’t show the greatest pocket presence tonight or decision making. I also thought that for such a renowed offensive line, the Badgers didn’t keep enough Spartans out of the backfield. Wilson’s size could be a deterrent for N.F.L teams, though I imagine he’ll be drafted in the third to fourth round range based on his potential.

The Game turned on a dime in the second quarter after Wisconsin Running back Montee Ball got (or laid a) viscous hit on a Michigan State Defender. He didn’t return until after the half, but by then it might have been too late. The Spartans had a huge second quarter and took the lead until the final minutes when Wilson and the Badgers were able to storm back.

Wilson made some nice plays and things might have been different if Abbrederis had been able to haul in a beautifully thrown ball at the 10 minute mark int he fourth quarter that could have gone 76 yards for a touchdown, but it wasn’t meant to be as fate intervened on the final play of the game.

A player that really shined for the Michigan State was B.J. Cunningham an underrated Wide Receiver prospect who has good hands and good yards after the catch ability.IF you want to see how good his hands are check out his two point conversion catch near the beginning of the fourth quarter. He had 6 catches for 102 yards.

For Wisconsin I was really impressed with junior linebacker #44 Chris Borland   he’s relentless, great pursuit, and really good instincts. He fights through tackles and shoots the gaps well.  He was making plays all over the field in the pass game and in the run game. I’ll have to watch him more moving forward.to see how well he plays in zone coverage because Michigan state didn’t throw the ball that much and I was watching other players who are more likely to declare this year, but he just jumped of the screen at times.

Montee Ball is a very quality back. It’s tough because the Wisconsin offensive line is so good that there are always a lot of holes, but he is real decisive. He looks faster on the field than he gets credit for and has a decent build. I wish I could watch Ball behind a “lesser line”, but I’m confident that he’s a good player. I like his game a lot.

Michigan State quarterback Kirk Cousins’ line will look impressive 22 for 31 for 290 yards with 3 Touchdowns and zero interceptions, but I don’t think he’s a starting N.F.L. Quarterback. My co-editor Sayre even said on twitter that Cousins is a Scott Tolzien like prospect. I’m not sure he’s that bad, he has some size and is a pretty good leader, but I don’t think he should be drafted before the third day.

Oh, and forgive me if this doesn’t as flow as well as I would like it to. I’ was up all day preparing for my son’s fifth birthday party and then busy all day chasing five years old children hopped up on sugar, I just needed to get my reactions out there.
