Will it Last?

How many times do we see a team or a player exceed expectations in a football game and we think, there is no way that can last?  That player is either too young or not that good; that team had an easy week or the ball just bounced the right way.  Most times it does not last, but every so often those early signs are premonitions of what is to come.  In this weekly column we will look at 3 players and 3 teams who jumped out this weekend and forecast whether or not the player/team had a lucky game or whether or not it is a positive sign for the future.

Players

  1. Kenny Britt:    Through two weeks in a new system with a new QB, Kenny Britt has been unstoppable.  His numbers: 14 receptions, 271 yards, and 3 Touchdowns are making his teammates and numerous fantasy owners happy.  Why is there some trepidation?  Two reasons: First he has shown these kinds of outbursts before and has fizzled out (think last season’s huge game against the Eaglesminor bouts with the law. He also has had some ).  Secondly the two secondaries he faced were average at best with Baltimore (minus Jimmy Smith) and Jacksonville.  Now that’s not to say Britt won’t have his best season this year.  Hasselbeck is by far the best QB Britt has played. This is also Britt’s  third season as a Pro which tends to be a WR’s coming out party.  I think he will enjoy a memorable season.   Will Last, though numbers will go slightly down.
  1.  Rex Grossman:         For a guy that was battling with John Beck tooth and nail this off season, he seems to be a solid starting QB early in the 2011 NFL season.  In the past two weeks he has led the Redskins to victories vs. the Giants and Cardinals.  He has thrown for 596 yards and 4 touchdowns.  Look, everyone knows Rex has talent, but everyone knows he has bouts of inconsistency.  I like his chances with Shanahan at the helm, but I still am not a believer on a week to week basis.  Will not last on a week to week basis.
  1. Roddy White:             Most fantasy draft experts had Roddy White pegged as either the second or third best fantasy WR.  Through two weeks he has 10 receptions, 84 yards, and 1 TD.  If he continues on this pace he will post 80 receptions, 672 yards, and 8 Touchdowns.  These numbers are low for White.  Now, it was assumed his numbers could go down with Julio Jones emergence but not by this much.  Two weeks is not enough time for fans to get down on White and I sense he will step it up.   His Limited production will not last.

Team

1.      Kansas City Chiefs:         This team was 10-6 last season and went to the playoffs.  The Chiefs were considered a young and up coming team.  So why are they 0-2 and been out scored 10-89 by the Bills and Lions?  This question has multiple answers.  Losing Charlie Weis was bad news for this offense.  Weis is a horrible HC but he is an amazing OC.  He was instrumental in making Cassell appear solid.  Matt Cassell is a limited QB who cannot make deep throws which limit the offense.  Todd Haley is not a great HC and has an ego the size of a great coach. The  Chiefs have also lost Jamal Charles, Tony Moeaki, and Eric Berry for the season.  These are 3 of their better players.  Chiefs appear ready to compete for Andrew Luck.  I cannot sense more than 3-4 wins.  Their struggles Will last.

2.      Houston Texans:              We have seen this before haven’t we?  The Texans are supposed to be good, but then they always start the season off horribly and have to claw their way back to respectability the rest of the season.  Well not in 2011.  I know the Colts and Dolphins are bad, but this team needed this kind of hot start.  The defense appears to be decent enough to not hurt the Texans…and that’s all they need it to be to make the playoffs.  Offense looks complete.  I think this team is talented and plays in the worst division in the NFL.  I sense 10-11 wins and the Texans first post season apperance!!!  Will Last

3.      Detroit Lions:                   Every team loved laughing at the Detroit Lions the past 10 season.  No one is laughing any more.  New management brought in better coaching, new attitudes, and talent on all levels.  The explosive offense is balanced with a ferociously, aggressive defense.  Let me ask you: If a team has a franchise QB, loaded with weapons on offense, a good ST’s, a great young coach, and a dominate DL, How will it not last?  Expect post season and maybe even a playoff run.  Will Last.
