Detroit Lions Week 2 Analysis

Lions Analysis:  Lions 48 (2-0)     Chiefs 3 (0-2)

What Happened:

The start of the game was actually a close battle.  Lions scored first making it 7-0.  The beginning drive for the Lions set up how the day would go: Chiefs defeating themselves.  It took the Chiefs fumbling their interception as well as two 15 yard penalties for the Lions to score.  Chiefs drove the ball down and settled for a FG.  Chiefs just did not want this game.  Turnovers, penalties, and botched assignments plagued the Chiefs today.  As a Lifelong Lions fan I know how this feels.  Things are different now for the Lions.  Offense, defense, and coaching are all on borderline elite levels.  Matthew Stafford makes the difference.  I feel like this is the start of something special.

What We Learned:

1.       Matthew Stafford can take a hit.  Even though the Chiefs did not register a sack…Stafford took quite a few big hits.  It was nice to see since Stafford ability has never been questioned…only his ability to stay healthy has been questioned.

2.       Jahvid Best makes the Lions offense complete.  He gives the Lions some semblance of a running game.He is also one of the best receivers out of the backfield in the league.  Without Best, the offense becomes one dimensional.  His health is almost as important as Stafford’s.

3.       Detroit showed they can handle being the clear cut favorite.  It was unknown how the Lions would handle being a 9 point favorite. It appears the  Lions are fine with it.  Coaching as well as team leaders keep this a focused, scary football team.

Questions That Need Answers:

1.       Where is Cliff Avril?  He signed a one year tender and wants a long term deal.  He had 19.5 sacks in 3 years.  This season he has 0 in two games.  Maybe I am nitpicking, but his run defense is suspect so he needs to register a 8-12 sack season to get a big deal…can he do it?

2.       Why was Eric Wright not more coveted?  He has been a blanket so far this season.  He has been a solid tackler, has one interception, and has not allowed multiple completions in either game.  Should he get a multi-year deal soon?

3.       2-0 and looking like an elite team….Is there any reason not to believe the post season is not a real possibility this season?

What’s Next

Going to Minnesota has never been easy for the Lions.  In fact the Lions have not won there since 1997.  Lions have been shedding a lot of bad streaks lately….can they shed one more…tune in next week true believers.
