Report: Denver Broncos Sign DT Ty Warren, Talking Trade for Osi Umenyiora?

facebooktwitterreddit

The Denver Broncos have announced that they have signed defensive tackle Ty Warren, formerly of the New England Patriots to a two year, $10 million deal worth $2.5 million guaranteed. This is a good, low risk move by the Broncos who have desperately needed help along the defensive front. As of Tuesday, the Broncos have made additions in the last couple of days that included bringing back Marcus Thomas, signing on Derrick Harvey, trading for Brodrick Bunkley, and now signing Ty Warren.

But the fun doesn’t stop there.

According to multiple news outlets, the Broncos have been in discussions with the New York Giants to acquire veteran defensive end Osi Umenyiora. The Broncos are joined by teams like Seattle, San Diego, St. Louis, and Baltimore in the “Osi Sweepstakes” and it’s been rumored that the Giants have lowed their asking price to a second round draft pick (they were previously asking for a first, and that’s not happening).

There is a rumor out there that the Seahawks, who just signed tight end Zach Miller, could offer John Carlson and a draft pick to the Giants. The Broncos could offer a draft pick and possibly a player like linebacker D.J. Williams, who would fit in well with the Giants.

It all depends on how serious these teams are about talking with Umenyiora, but I single out the Broncos specifically because I just got back from their training camp, and adding Umenyiora to the fold could give them a very fearsome pass rush, one that could dominate in the NFL. With Elvis Dumervil coming back from injury and the team spending the 2nd overall pick on linebacker Von Miller, the team’s pass rush has already been significantly upgraded.

Add Umenyiora to the fold, and you’ve got yourself something brewing.

A trade will be contingent upon Umenyiora receiving a contract extension. He is currently holding out of camp with two years left on his current contract, and he will want a new deal wherever he goes.

One has to wonder why any 3-4 team would be asking about him, as that doesn’t seem like a good fit. According to one source, the leaders right now for Osi are Denver and Seattle, but neither team is pulling away at this point. With the asking price lowered, the market for him seems like it will heat up at any moment.

Stay tuned.
