Breaking: Donovan McNabb to Minnesota For Draft Picks

It appears as though Leslie Frazier wasn’t quite confident enough in Christian Ponder to give him the reigns. Instead, the Vikings have opted to trade a sixth-rounder in 2012 and a conditional sixth-rounder in 2003 in return for McNabb.

Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer was the first to break this story, and judging by how reliable he’s been in the past, I would say he’s right on the money, once again.

The Vikings likely traded for McNabb in order to increase Sidney Rice’s likelihood of staying in Minnesota. Sid probably wasn’t fond of having a rookie quarterback potentially throwing him the ball next year.

Seattle is reportedly extremely intent on signing Rice away from the Vikings, but Minnesota is clearly not going down without a fight. Judging by the two offenses, though, I don’t see why Sidney is even contemplating this.

The Vikings have a great 1-2 punch at running back, one of the best quarterbacks of all time at the helm, a dynamic receiver in Percy Harvin and two solid tight ends in Visanthe Shiancoe, and the rookie, Kyle Rudolph.

The Seahawks are preparing to give Rice a very rich offer that Minnesota may not be able to match, unless they free up some cap space. Bernard Berrian could become a roster casualty, if that’s the case.

Despite landing the 34-year-old McNabb, the Vikings’ number one target was Tyler Thigpen, who signed a three-year deal with the Buffalo Bills. Bruce Gradkowski also received some interest from Minnesota.

Even with the terrible season Donovan had last season, he’s still a top-15 quarterback right now. Besides, it’s n0t like Washington surrounded him with very much talent, and the running game hardly helped out.

McNabb is now in his ideal situation with the Vikings, as he looks to capture his first Super Bowl Championship. Minnesota, once again, is a playoff contender with this move.
