2011 NFL Draft News and Notes: College Football Spring Practice Notes, Ryan Mallett Tumbling, Cowboys Draft Plans, and more

facebooktwitterreddit

Well I’m sticking with News and Notes despite how uninspiring and unoriginal that is for the news segment until I come up with a better title or a reader (that’s you!) provides me with a good idea. These news and notes have to do with spring practices, the Dallas Cowboys, Ryan Mallett and more.

We’re still looking for more writers, we’re growing pretty fast and want to add fantasy writers as well as people who love college football. If you’re interested in having a career in sports this can be a great opportunity for you. Email me at bartolisj@gmail.com. You can also email me first round mock drafts or full team mock drafts and we’ll feature it at the site.

And if this is your first time here, and you love the draft make sure to bookmark us because unlike most people who run draft sites out there, I have no life so we update constantly. Which is why I’m able to bring you so many draft stories today, and new content daily, even if you disagree with it.

First let’s check out what’s happening College Football’s Spring practices:

Oklahoma State Safety Markelle Martin will miss all spring practices because of his shoulder

Brandon Moore of Alabama has been suspended indefinitely by head coach Nick Saban

South Carolina Offensive linemen Ronald Patrick is also expected to miss all of spring, but not because of a suspension.

Texas Tech’s QB front runner so far is Seth Doege according to offensive coordinator Neal Brown

Here is some news about Clemons spring practices

This is more of a fan forum, but it’s about the Badgers spring practices if you’re interested.

Here are some notes on SEC college spring practices.

And Some NFL Draft News: (Or in other words Rumors!)

Here’s one just in: the Cardinals owners personally attended a Blaine Gabbert workout . According to PFT, the Cardinals are much more interested in Blaine Gabber than they are interested in Cam Newton.

Draftinsider.net Check it. There’s some great stuff there today among that stuff is as follows:

Draftinsider.net says that Ryan Mallett, once again, is tumbling down draft boards, but benefiting from that is TCU QB Andy Dalton, and that the Jaguars would love to have him at 49th overall, but don’t believe he’ll be available then. Wow, really? Didn’t see that coming. Apparently if the Jaguars can’t get Dalton they will grab a big possession WR (Terrance Toliver? Maybe Austin Pettis in round 3?)

The reasons are simple; the issues which surround his character and more to the point, Mallett’s personality, are worrisome.  One source called Mallett “this year’s Dez Bryant.”

Dez Bryant gives us a nice transition into the Dallas Cowboys who apparently will be cutting Marc Colombo, Terrance Newman, and Leonard Davis soon. That they don’t love Prince Amukamara and that they will most likely be going with a tackle who can play the Right side in the first round (sounds like the cowboys are either going to trade up for Patrick Peterson or trade down and grab an OL if you ask me-maybe Gabe Carimi?).  Wow, I typed that last sentence before I read on further, which says that Gabe Carimi is their favorite tackle because they believe he can start right away.

Remember though it only takes one.

Though Wes Bunting is hearing that the Cowboys like Tyron Smith and he might be a lock at 9, I think THIS is more likely to be fed to people than the other thing. We all recognize at this time of year teams feed their sources information they want leaked. The Cowboys have had a penchant for drafting big, massive, maulers in the run game for a long time now. That’s Gabe Carimi, that’s not Tyron Smith. Tyron Smith is now up to 307 pounds, but that’s during the off-season when there is much more strength workouts than conditioning for a lot of people and more time to put on weight, he might struggle to play near the 310 pound range during the season.

We understand the San Diego Chargers will be looking at OLB/RT/WR/CB with their early selections. Ryan Kerrigan is high on the teams’ wish list.

Possible for sure. Those all make sense, I’m just surprised not to see DL.

Peter King’s MMQ is devoted to the draft today.

Interesting tidbits in there: Cameron Newton and Blaine Gabbert are going in the top 5. Though it makes me sick he referred to them as CamBlaine. Yuck.

Teams are backing off both Nick Fairley and Marcel Dareus

Teams really like Corey Liuget but are trying to hide their interest. Meh, I’ve made my feelings be known about Liuget. I don’t get the huge love. I think he’s ok. I love him in the second round, wouldn’t take him before the late first, but what do I know?

He’ll probably go in the top half 20 Peter King thinks. Makes sense if he’s considered the third best DT, but that’s not breaking news really. St. Louis Rams, New York Giants are two favorites in my mind (King doesn’t specify teams), but does mention that scouts think he can play the 5 technique so don’t rule out New England either. I would have said the Chargers, but it seems that they may be leaning more towards OLB or CB.

Wes Bunting of National Football Post is saying the same thing: and mentions the Rams specifically.

I think more breaking news would be there are teams in the top 20 that love Muhammad Wilkerson.

The Bills Love both Patrick Peterson and Von Miller (not a surprise, especially on Miller), but they still could take a QB. I’ve thought for awhile they’ll go Defense, but I’m thinking QB is a possibility. My wife, a big Bills fan, says Ralph Wilson still too cheap to take a QB in the top 5. We’ll see.

Profootballtalk reports the NFLPA* is meeting today to decide what to do about the N.F.L. Draft

From National Football Post

Ahmad Black has a FA Grade on several teams draft boards.I’ve been reading this a lot lately. I’ve also have not seen one positive thing about any safety in this class as of late (Rahim Moore a third round grade to a lot of scouts, reportedly).

Apparently, Daniel Thomas, has been rescheduling a lot of meetings, or just not showing up and that’s raising some a big Red Flag.

If I’m a fan of a team I say

From everyone I’ve talked with this week, there seems to be a growing belief that there are actually some legs to the Patriots-Chargers potential first-round trade involving the Pats 28th overall pick.
