2011 NFL Mock Draft: Nearly There

facebooktwitterreddit

This is round 6 of a full 7 round mock draft. And let me tell you it’s not as easy as it may seem to go 7 rounds deep. I keep thinking, I should have put this player earlier, and this one too, and that one.  But of course they can’t all go earlier.

My thought about the 6th round is that teams should target players that fall because of injury or character concerns, or find specialists because most of the players drafted in the 6th round won’t be in the N.F.L. for long

Rounds 1. 2. 3., and four. and round 5.

Hope you enjoy.

161. Carolina Panthers-Derrell Johnson Koulianos

Previous picks:  Marcel Dareus, Greg Romerus, Lawrence Wilson, Zach Hurd

Iowa’s most productive career receiver. DJK has some “character issues” which could push him down the draft. Koulianos was a combine snub and could be drafted higher than this, but will have to impress at the pro-day and meet with teams to convince them that there are no character concerns.

162. Cleveland Browns-Richard Sherman, CB, Stanford

Previous Picks:  Nick Fairley, Leonard Hankerson, Greg Jones, Jordan Todman, Chris Carter

Sherman is a high upside player that could be drafted here by the Browns to offer them some depth at the position. Sherman transitioned to cornerback from WR at Stanford and has the athleticism to become a starting cornerback in the league. Sherman is very raw though at the position, also offers ability as a potential return man.

163. Cincinnati Bengals-Owen Marecic, FB, Stanford

Previous picks: Julio Jones, Ryan Mallett, Jaiquwqnn Jarrett, Will Rackley, Markus White

One of the biggest, and under-publicized reasons the Bengals struggled last year was their run game took a significant step backward. Marecic is the opposite of the kind of player the Bengals have shown a willingness to draft recently (high upside, but character or work ethic concerns) as a standout two way player in college who will be a great addition to the locker room and also as a full back and special teams player.

164. Buffalo Bills-Eric Hagg, S, Nebraska

Previous Picks: Von Miller, Gabe Carimi, Colin Kaperenick, Lance Kendricks, Colin McCarthy, Brandyn Thompson

The Buffalo Bills have talent in the secondary, but they have no depth. Haag offers depth behind Donte Whinter and could become the eventual starter if he leaves via free agency. The Bills will also consider more linebacker options here.

165. Cleveland Browns-Justin Boren, G, Ohio State

Previous Picks:  Nick Fairley, Leonard Hankerson, Greg Jones, Jordan Todman, Chris Carter, Richard Sherman

Floyd Womack turns a 134 years old (actually younger than I thought he was: he will turn 33 in November next season) so the Browns have to find some depth and potential starters at the guard position. Boren is probably the best guard available left at this juncture.

166. Arizona Cardinals-Darryl Skrine, CB, UT-Chattanooga

Previous Picks: Robert Quinn, Stefen Wisinewski, Andy Dalton, Jeremy Beal, Jeremey Kerley

National Football Post just wrote an article about how he’s rising up draft boards and could be a late round steal. The Cardinals could use depth at cornerback, and even another starter opposite DRC. In this mock though they address other needs first and take Skrine here at this juncture.

167. Seattle Seahaws-Cortez Allen, CB, Citadel

Previous Picks: Cam Newton, Jurrel Casey, Henry Hynoski, Joe Barksdale, Terrance Toliver

He’s tall and fast and is another late round cornerback who is a possible steal. The Seahawks could address CB in the first round if the value is there, or at any other point in the draft when the value is there. The Seahawks have some big needs despite the fact that they made the playoffs last year. Allen is good value here in the 6th round.

168. San Francisco 49ers-Dwayne Harris, WR East Carolina

Patrick Peterson, Chrisitan Ponder, Kelvin Sheppard, Daniel Thomas, Lawrence Guy, Marcus Gilchrist

“Strong possession wide out with reliable hands. Well thought of in scouting circles” -Draftinsider.net.   The 49ers could use some more depth at WR, and while I think they could use a field stretcher, there’s none worth taking here. They should take a player who can become a possession WR in the league, especially if they are going to run the West coast offense which relies on precision routes and controlling the ball through short passes.

169. Tennessee Titans-Brian Rolle, OLB, Ohio State

Previous Picks: A.J. Green, Marvin Austin, Curtis Brown, Ricky Stanzi, Roy Helu

Rolle is a small linebacker, but speedy and has sideline to sideline range. He offers good upside here as a tackling machine if he can hold up at the next level.

170. Dallas Cowboys-Brandon Fusco, C, Slippery rock

Previous Picks: Nate Solder, Cameron Hewyard, Brandon Burton, Ahmahd Black, Chris Hairston

I had no intention of giving the Cowboys so many offensive linemen, but other than Fusco the best available players are at positions they might not address: Running back and Tight end.

171. Washington Redskins-Jalil Brown, C, Colorado

Jake Locker, Ryan Williams, Greg Salas, Rickey Elmore,

The Redskins have age at cornerback and need to find some players to provide youth and depth. They hope that Brown was over-shadowed by Jimmy Smith at Colorado but the Redskins hope that he can develop into a starter for them iover the next few years as Deangelo Hall, Phillip Buchannon, and Carlos Rodgers are all rapidly approaching 30.

172. Houston Texans-Devon Torrence, CB, Ohio State

Previous picks: Phil Taylor, Titus Young, Brooks Reed, Chykie Brown, Tim Barnes

The Texans secondary is not very good. They need to upgrade that immediately. Another OLB is also possible here.

173. Minnesota Vikings-Zach Pianalto, TE, North Carolina

Previous Picks: Blaine Gabbert, Muhammad Wilkerson, Curtis Marsh, Brandon Bair, Ronald Johnson

Kleinsasser just turned 34 years old and a future replacement for him is needed. Pinialto is one of my favorite underrated players in the draft who has been hurt by being hurt at his time at North Carolina. When he plays though he is a good pass catcher and solid blocker and an ideal #2 in the N.F.L

174. Miami Dolphins-Noel Devine, RB, Miami

Previous Picks: Mikel LeShoure, Marcus Cannon, Casey Matthews, Rickardo Lockette

I’ve been going heavy on offense with the Dolphins, but that’s because I think they have a tough, young defense that is in need of only a few repairs (better safeties, and an inside linebacker). While their offense was only able to score 17 points a game (31st in the league). The Dolphins have also talked about adding more speed to their offense. In this mock with the last two picks they take that to heart adding to dynamic players. Noel Devine could go much higher if teams think he can handle the pounding of the N.F.L. Ricky Williams and Ronnie Brown could both be gone (Depending on whether or not there is free agency) so the Dolphins adding two running backs in the off-season is a possibility.

175. St. Louis Rams-Terrel McClain, USF

Previous Picks: Cameron Jordan, Mason Foster, Luke Stocker, Clint Boling, Cecil Short

A steal if he’s still available here. Spags knows how important defensive linemen are in the success of a team in the N.F.L. And while the Rams could add another linebacker to compete for a starting spot at some point, they can’t pass up the value of McClain here in the 6th round.

176. Oakland Raiders-Brandon Saine, RB, Ohio State

Previous Picks: Aaron Williams, Marcus Gilbert, Julius Thomas, Cliff Matthews

We here at NFLmocks like what Alex Green of Hawaii brings to the table, but he’s not the fastest player in the world which might make the Raiders shy away from him. However, Brandon Saine is 220 pounds and ran a 4.44 40 yard dash at the combine. The Raiders have two good running backs with Bush and McFadden, but retreads with Cartwright and Bennett and in 23 games they had a combined 11 carries. Both players are over thirty years old and the Raiders could look to add a late round running back.

177. Jacksonville Jaguars-Alex Henery, K

Previous Picks: Ryan Kerrigan, Quinton Carter, Mark Herzlich, Chris L. Rucker, Edumund Gates, Pat Delvin

Josh Scobee was one of the worst kickers in the league last year (percentage wise) and the Jaguars could use an upgrade here. Henery is the best kicker available.

178. San Diego Chargers-Jordan Cameron, TE, USC

Previous picks: Martez Wilson, Jaball Sheard, DeMarco Murray, Deunta Williams, Lee Ziemba

The Chargers add depth to the TE position here because Antonio Gates has been injured a lot the past two seasons. Cameron could go higher than this, but this TE class as a whole is not great.

179. Arizona Cardinals-Jarriel King, T, South Carolina

Previous Picks: Robert Quinn, Stefen Wisinewski, Andy Dalton, Jeremy Beal, Jermey Kerley, Darryl Skrine,

King is an athletic pass blocker who will add depth the Cardinals Offensive line. He might not have the athleticism to play LT in the league, but will fit somewhere along the line. A solid run blocker and all around good fundamentally sound and pretty talented player.

180. New York Giants-DeAndre Brown, WR, Southern Mississippi

Previous Picks: Tyron Smith, Ras-I-Dowling, Jake Kirkpatrick, Jacquizz Rodgers

DeAndre Brown is 6-5 plus and runs a 4.59 40  yard dash. He is the kind of high potential player the Giants will be intrigued by in the draft. They could look to add a full back, Tight end, or more OL/DL depth here as well. But the Giants like to draft B.P.A and this could be a sneaky pick by them, even though they have a lot of talent at Wide Receiver akin to when they drafted Rhett Bomar at QB because of his huge upside. The Giants need a linebacker, but they have enough late round Linebacker prospects already on their team. And must address LB in free agency.

181. Atlanta Falcons-Taiwan Jones, RB, Eastern Washington

Previous Picks: Stephen Paea, Torrey Smith, Pernell Mcphee, Orlando Franklin, Will Hill

High upside player for the Falcons to draft to add depth at the running back position and push Gartrell Johnson and Antone Smith for a job.

182. Tampa Bay Buccaneers-Pierre Allen, DE, Nebraska

Previous Picks: Aldon Smith, Bruce Carter, Tyle Sash, John Moffitt, Adrian Moten

Allen is a player that can come in and provide immediate help as a situational pass rusher. He’s also well rounded, but lacks elite athletic ability. He has no work ethic concerns and is reportedly into community service and a team leader.

183. Indianapolis Colts-Jermale Hines, S, Ohio State

Previous Picks: Anthony Castanzo, Rodney Hudson, Jarvis Jenkins, Kendall Hunter, Vincent Brown

An effective run stuffer who is also very instinctual who could intrigue the Colts who are looking for safety depth with the release of Bob Sanders.

184. New England Patriots-Mario Fanin, RB

:Previous picks: J.J. Watt, Brandon Harris, Justin Houston, Danny Watkins, Tandon Doss, DeMarcus VanDyke: Nathan Enderle

Fanin isn’t a great running back, but he’s a great athlete and offers a ton of upside. He ran a 4.37 at 231 pounds at the combine (walterfootball.com). He is a good pass catcher out of the backfield which is important in the Patriots offense. The Patriots should add a running back at some point in the draft so that they can release Taylor, Morris, and Faulk to clear up some roster space. Alex Green is a nice option here as well.

185. San Francisco 49ers-Charlie Gantt, TE, Michigan State

Previous Picks: Patrick Peterson, Chrisitan Ponder, Kelvin Sheppard, Daniel Thomas, Lawrence Guy, Marcus Gilchrist , Dwayne Harris

A great blocker who is also reliable in the short passing game.

186. Baltimore Ravens-Jah Reid, RT

Previous picks: Jon Baldwin, Davon House, Sam Acho, Robert Sands

A monster and punishing run blocking right tackle to add depth for the Ravens and could eventually become a starter. He’s not athletic enough to play LT, but he could become of the best RT in the league as a big time run blocker and OK pass blocker.

187. Atlanta Falcons-Virgil Green, TE, Nevada

Previous Picks: Stephen Paea, Torrey Smith, Pernell Mcphee, Orlando Franklin, Will Hill, Taiwan Jones

A great pass catching tight end that should add another dimension to the Falcons passing game. Not great at run blocking though, so the Falcons will have to get a run blocking TE after Gonzalez retires.

188. Denver Broncos-Chris Neild, DT, West Virgina

Previous Picks: Da’Quan Bowers, Kyle Rudolph, Drake Nevis, Johnny Patrick

The Broncos got rid of almost all of their defensive tackles and need to add more players along the defensive line (which they had to do before they released more defensive linemen). Some scouts think Nield could go as high as the third round.

189. Chicago Bears-Alex Green, RB, Hawaii

Previous Picks: Derrick Sherrod, Allen Bailey, Kendric Bruney, Austin Pettis, Jonas Mouton

The Bears were not in love with what Chester Taylor brought ot the team this year and could look to add another running back in the draft. At this point in the draft Green is good value, despite being nearly 230 pounds Green also an ability to catch the football out of the backfield which is important in the Bears offense.

190.New York Jets-Greg McElroy QB Alabama

Previous Picks: Akeem Ayers, Randall Cobb, Cedric Thornton, Joe Lefedged

Mark Brunell can not continue to be Mark Sanchez back-up. Even if he offers wisdom and guidance he can not be counted on if he has to enter the game next year due to a Sanchez injury. The Jets need a young QB to develop into a solid #2 Starter and then if other teams think he can become something more the Jets can trade him away for an earlier draft pick.

191. Pittsburgh Steelers-Justin Rogers, CB, Richmond

Previous picks: Rahim Moore, Christian Ballard, James Brewer, Derrick Locke, Adam Grant

The Steelers need to add players at cornerback and could really consider drafting a cornerback much earlier than they have in this mock draft.

192. Green Bay Packers- Denarius Moore WR Tennessee

Previous picks: Mike Pouncey, D.J. Williams, Siona Fua, Delone Carter, Derek Newton

The Packers are not bringing back James Jones and could look to add depth at the WR position.
