Team Mock Draft: Seattle Seahawks

by NFL Draft

blogseattlepi.com

Up next in our team mock draft series is the most transient roster in the National Football League, the Seattle Seahawks. Pete Carroll was a mad scientist last year cutting, trading, signing, cutting, resigning, developing, bringing back from the dead (mike Williams) and parlayed all those moves into the playoffs.

What will the mad scientist do this year? Well considering how successfully he drafted last year Seahawk fans have to be a bit encouraged.

Here’s what I think some of the Seahawks needs are:

RT-Russell Okung looks like he’s going to be a very good player if he can stay healthy, but on the right side Sean Locklear is not someone that you just play year after year without a challenge. If the value is available for a RT in the first round it will be a heavy consideration.

Strong Safety-is Kim Chancellor that guy? If not they have to find one for the long haul. Lawyer Milloy has been a very good footballl player, he was jus told 10 years ago and he can’t play forever (and if he can God bless him)

WR I think the Seahawks have 3 very good complimentary WR, but still lack a true bonafide #1 (Mike Williams could be a great #2, but I don’t think he’s a long term #1)

DE/DT-The Seahawks could use another defensive end to rush the passer and more depth and possibly a starter at Defensive tackle if the value is right.

CB-Every team always needs more cornerbacks, the Seahawks are no exception.

Mock Coming up after the page break.

1st round pick 25 Stephen Paea, DT, Oregon State

I think the Seahawks could look to go a few different directions in this draft, but they could use a lot of help at defensive tackle in the draft. Paea was a top 15 player to some before an injury at the senior bowl which might push his draft stock down. Paea could be the best player available here at a position of need because I think all four cornerbacks will be gone, the top 3 WR, and the best pass rushing defensive ends. They could consider a guy like Gabe Carimi to have book-end tackles for the next 10 years, but this time they take a penetrating DT who is also a run stuffer and could do very well in the 4-3.

2nd round pick 57  Ben Ijalana OT, Villanova

The Seahawks don’t have a  third round pick so they should address the offensive line now. While they have Russel Okung on one side Sean Locklear is not a good player and they could use an upgrade.  Ijalana domianted against lower level competition and could go a little higher than this, I also conisdered safety here as well, but the Seahawks drafted two safeties last year so they might give Kim Chancellor another year to see if he can become a starting safety to play next to Earl Thomas because Lawyer Milloy went to school with George Washington and can’t play much longer.

4th Round pick 98 Marcus Gilchrist, CB/S Clemson

Gilchrist would give the Seahawks a versatile player who can play at either cornerback or safety and also help on Special teams. Gilchrist is good value in the 4th round and would probably be one of the better players available. He was also a senior leader for the Clemson Tigers and could fit the mold of player Pete Carrol is searching for his team.

5th round pick 153 Greg McCelroy QB, Alabama

Matt Hasselbeck needs a successor eventually. I don’t think the Seahawks want to spend a high pick on a QB in the first two rounds because they’re using a third one for Charlie Whitehurst.  McElroy might appeal to Pete Carroll because he’s a winner and a smart player. The offense the Seahawks ran last year doesn’t need a big time strong armed quarterback and McElroy could be a nice developmental project if they think Hasselbeck has two more yeas in him.

5th round pick 154 Greg Romeus, DE, Pittsburgh

Romeu’s stock is down, but at this point in the draft offers the highest upside value and would fill a position of need for the Seattle Seahawks. I was going to put down Brooks Reed here, but I think his stock is pointing up and could go in the first three rounds.

6th round 167  Orlando Franklin, Guard, Miami

At this point in the draft, just draft players you think have a chance to play in the N.F.L. Teams can always use more depth on the offensive line and Franklin has a chance to eventually become a starter with some seasoning and coaching.

7th round 198th Clay Nurse,  DE, Illinois

In the 7th round you either select Special teams players or raw players with big upside and this is case of the latter. Nurse is an athletic young kid who doesn’t have a ton of experience, but he has good athleticism and size and could eventually turn into something in the N.F.L.

This is my mock draft for the Seahawks…what do you think?

What do you love?  What do you Hate?

Have a nice day, everyone.

i like the first two picks. i agree that those are both positions of need. the corner in the 4th round i see as kind of a reach. gilchrist never really stood out to me. we drafted a corner there last year in thurmond and i dont see us doing it again.

it seems like we need more depth at linebacker. tatupu cant seem to stay healthy and we might be looking to find a successor for him. i like casey mathews out of oregon if hes there. mason foster also seems like a logical pick.

im not a huge fan of the mcelroy pick either. i think finding a long term qb is a priority but i dont see mcelroy as that guy. i could see us picking up locker, newton, or mallet with our first round pick, and maybe even ponder or dalton with the second, but i dont see us gambling on a guy any later than that. kaepernick is the only guy that seems justifiable to me, only because of his massive upside. if hes there when we pick in the 4th then we might consider taking him there.

i agree with your later picks as well. guard seems to be a need and if we could find a late round steal it would be amazing. pass rush is always a nice area to upgrade as well. the only thing i can say is that we may decide to draft a special teams athlete. if theres someone on the board late who could be a potential returner ( as leon washington is a free agent and i dont see him staying ) that would be very valuable.

more depth at db may be an option late as well

    • “say is that we may decide to draft a special teams athlete. if theres someone on the board late who could be a potential returner more depth at db may be an option late as well”

..that’s what I was thinking with Gilchrist.

Marucs Gilchrist is a Cornerback/safety combo who also has Kick return ability and should be a special teams/glue guy…I think his true value is probably on special teams to start and the fact that he’s versatile enough to play CB or Safety in a pinch.

I can understand wanting a more physically gifted QB to develop, but Kapernick’s stock is too high for me right now (a lot of 2nd round projections) and I just thought Mcelroy is a winner and with Pete Carrol emphasizing “the right kind of guy” last year I thought he might fit the mold.

I really thought about a linebacker, but I just couldn’t figure out the correct value for a linebacker after the second round so I passed on it. I agree though that depth at linebacker is definitely something that could work.

Thank you for the comments and I’ll take them into consideration moving forward.

I don’t like the Paea pick because I want him to be their for the broncos in the early 2nd. ;)

    So here is my take…

The only pick really worth a 25 is Jimmy Smith CB Colorado or if there is a huge run on OL in round one forcing us to take Pouncey, Carimi, or Castanzo.

If Jimmy is gone and 2 or more of the 3 OL are available trade back to get more picks. If Smith is gone and only 1 OL is still available take the OL.

So pick 1 Smith or OL

Pick 2 If Smith in the first take best OL available
If OL in the first take Jurrell Casey in the 2nd because we are not resigning Mebane if we franchise him it will cost us 12 million he isn’t worth that plus he is a 1 tech playing 3 tech we have a better 1 tech in Cole so we need to draft a real 3 tech and that is Casey.

4th Round Depending of course who is still on the board but I’d go with Owen Marecic FB Stanford, or Casey Mathews MLB Oregon or Kelvin Sheppard MLB LSU

    5th Cortez Allen CB Citadel

    5th Zach Hurd OG Conneticut

6th Edmund Gates WR Abilene Christian

7th Mark Iegree FS/SS App State

    • I think Simth in the first round is ideal, but I do’nt think he’ll be there. Brandon Harris might. I think Casey would be a reach in the second round he’s not the best player in my humble opinion, but could be a possibility. I’d hope Liguet or Wilkerson fall somehow.

I’m surprised you don’t like Paea in the first if you want a DT who can take up space and stop the run, which Paea can do. His arms a bit short, but he’s a bull, very hard to move and was very productive. I think at 25 he also might be B.P.A.

I’m glad to see though that I had mostly the positions right, even if we disagree with the players. I like Cortez Allen in the 5th though. Good upside.

      Thanks for the comments,

        No you did very well…

Paea I would be fine with him though I’d trade back to get him as he is now projecting early 2nd round instead of late first. My Problem with Paea as far as the Seahawks are concerned is that like MeBane and Cole he is a 1 tech. Casey is a 3 tech in a 4-3 or a 5 tech in a 3-4, we need someone who can get penetration up the middle and we won’t if we keep taking 1 techs.

I actually like McElroy or Devlin and would trade a 4th next year to take one of these two this year, as I don’t have a QB in this draft.
