2011 NFL Draft Trade Rumors: Is Matt Flynn Worth a Second Round Pick?

Apparently when you win the Super Bowl, the value of your players is driven up significantly. Former LSU star quarterback Matt Flynn, now the backup quarterback for Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers, is being rumored as a hot young quarterback commodity this offseason. Flynn had a decent showing against the New England Patriots late in the 2010 season, a game the Packers nearly pulled off in the end.

Now, Flynn is being talked about in potential trades as we move closer to the draft, particularly so to the Tennessee Titans who are rumored to have their former top draft pick Vince Young on the market this offseason as well. Dan Pompei of the National Football Post thinks Flynn could return the Packers a second round pick this offseason. Is that possible or a bunch of mularkey?

When you look at some of the quarterback trades in recent history, you have to point to the Matt Schaub trade for any quarterback who has not had a ton of chance to prove himself. When you’re thinking about a guy like Kevin Kolb or Matt Flynn who could be traded this offseason, the Schaub trade is likely going to be one that is referenced a lot, because when he was with Atlanta, he had very little chance to prove himself but obviously had some serious skill.

The Texans traded quite a bounty in exchange for Schaub, a trade that really worked out well for both parties involved. I think Pompei might be on to something here, though. Look at the trade that the Seattle Seahawks made last offseason for Charlie Whitehurst.

Yes. Charlie Whitehurst.

Seattle sent their second and third round picks to the Chargers in exchange for their second round pick and Whitehurst. The value of the picks involved in the trade turned out to be second round value for the Chargers. The Packers, if interested in dealing Flynn, could very well make a similar deal. They could move from the bottom of the second round to the top and gain an extra high third round pick in exchange for Flynn’s services.

Such a move would leave them quite weak behind Aaron Rodgers, but the Packers have such a great eye for talent that it might not be anything to worry about. We will see how this develops over the course of the offseason.
