Seattle Seahawks won’t draft Jimmy Clausen

The intrigue remains as to where Clausen will end up in the draft.

While the Seattle Seahawks are one team mentioned as a potential destination for Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen, ESPN’s Mel Kiper said on Wednesday that the team will not select the Golden Domer. The fact that Seattle has two first-round picks is a big reason why people could see Clausen landing in a Seahawks uniform, but don’t expect Pete Carroll to use either of his first-rounders on the kid many view as “spoiled” in his first season as Seattle’s head coach.

Kiper used many sources close to the former USC head coach to confirm belief that Carroll would not select the quarterback he tried to recruit back in his days with the Trojans.

There is also the fact that the Seahawks dropped back twenty spots in the second-round and gave up a 2011 third-round pick to the Chargers for backup quarterback Charlie Whitehurst.

While the Seahawks do not appear to be high on Clausen, Mel Kiper has a different opinion. Kiper believes that Clausen is a better prospect than Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford who is the projected number one overall pick. Kiper has Clausen going to the Oakland Raiders in his latest mock draft.

“I do it for no other reason than how [Clausen] played, how he performed,” Kiper said. “He was playing through torn ligaments in his toe, and a lot of people don’t know that. People who don’t like him can’t give me a good reason why they don’t. Maturity issues may have been there when he came out of high school, but they’re not there any more.”

Of course, this is the same Mel Kiper who said JaMarcus Russell had “John Elway-like” talent.
