The Cleveland Browns traded for cornerback Sheldon Brown on Friday and the move could influence the Browns next move come April’s draft. It is widely known that Cleveland needs help in the defensive backfield, but with Brown now on the roster it could allow the Browns to add a ball-hawking safety to the roster. With Brown now in town, Florida corner Joe Haden, who was believed to be a favorite of the Browns can be passed up.
Theories are making the rounds that Tennessee safety Eric Berry could be the selection when Cleveland is on the clock in the draft.
The truth is Brown is a corner who is on the downside of his career, so his addition may not make as much of an impact as one would initially believe. If Haden was the favorite among Cleveland personnel, he will still likely be the pick. However, if the Browns want to fill up as many holes as possible, Berry could be an excellent addition and future star on the defense while Sheldon Brown fills in short term.
Berry is the top-rated safety in this year’s draft class and he has drawn comparisons to Baltimore Ravens All-Pro safety Ed Reed. He has the talent to be a perennial Pro Bowler at the NFL level. He brings a dynamic player to the safety position, as well as providing a spark on special teams.
