Mike Mayock: Ndamukong Suh and Gerald McCoy are, by far, the two best players

The Big 12 conference is known for the offensive firepower and high-flying offenses that are produced, so it seems a little strange that the two best defensive prospects in this years class — Ndamukong Suh of Nebraska and Gerald McCoy of Oklahoma — hail from the Big 12.

Mike Mayock of the NFL Network had a conference call with the media earlier in the week and he had no doubt in his mind that Suh and McCoy are the two best players available in the 2010 NFL Draft.

Suh is better against the run and McCoy offers the better pass rush, however, the Mayock says both players bring the complete package and the difference is small.

Mayock claims that Ndamukong Suh reminds him of Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle Kevin Williams. Williams is a five-time Pro Bowl selection and five-time First-Team All-Pro. Mayock’s praise for Suh does not end there. He continued on to say that he believes Suh may even be a better pro than Williams.

The St. Louis Rams and Detroit Lions hold the first two slots in April’s draft and both teams are in need of help along the defensive line.

There is also talk about the Rams looking for a quarterback with their first-overall selection. When asked about the possibility of a quarterback climbing to the top pick, Mayock said the move was unlikely.

“I think it’s a big reach,” Mayock said. “The logical guy is (Oklahoma’s Sam) Bradford. I’m not a big (Jimmy) Clausen fan. No way in the world in my mind -that’s today, I’ve still got a lot more work to do on Bradford. Those two players (Suh and McCoy) just dwarf the quarterback issue.”
