Bears Trade Too Much for Cutler

The Chicago Bears just traded the entire Windy City to Denver in exchange for a 25 year old quarterback without a playoff win. Well maybe not the entire city.

But it is comparable.

How you give up two first round picks (one in this year’s draft and one in next year’s), a third round pick, AND Kyle Orton in exhange for a quarterback that hasn’t done a whole lot in his career?

Don’t get me wrong. Obviously Cutler is young and improving every year. He’s got a strong arm and he’s shown the ability to lead although he hasn’t shown it in big games just yet.

To put it nicely this move was just a desperation move. The Bears have been through years of good/bad Rex Grossman and consistently unimpressive Kyle Orton. They were tired of losing due to their quarterback situation and they didn’t want to sit through another year dealing with a controversy.

So they rushed into a move where they give up three picks. If Chicago was willing to give up two first rounders I’m sure they could’ve traded up into a position where Matthew Stafford could have even been available if he was passed over by the Lions. It would have been impossible to acquire the number one pick from a team within their division, so if Detroit snagged Stafford it wouldn’t matter what Chicago did with their two first rounders in 2009 & 2010. Still trading a first and a third would have probably been enough to move up for Mark Sanchez in this year’s draft/

What I keep hearing is how Chicago got an accomplished quarterback and won’t have to deal with developing him.

The people that say that are wrong. Cutler has had one great season (last year) where he threw for over 4,000 yards and 25 TDs. The problem is that he continues to turn the ball over too much. In 37 career starts he’s thrown 37 INTs. He still has a lot of learning to do, but now he’s in the spotlight where the pressure is on.

I’m not saying Cutler won’t win in Chicago, because he probably will. I’m just saying that the Bears gave up a lot f0r him so he better win. If he plays poorly in his first year in Chicago the fans will likely boo him out of town.

One thing is for sure. Chicago thinks it can win with Cutler. If it didn’t then it would’ve have paid this hefty of a price for him.

And he better deliver.
