At best most people thought Miami would end 2008 with a 5 to 6 win season and be looking at a top 10 pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. Enter Bill Parcels. Enter Jeff Ireland. Enter Tony Sporano. The Trifecta restored hope in South Florida by bringing in football players and instilling discipline. This translated to an 11-5 record and the AFC East crown. The challenge will be to keep the momentum going and while from the outside it may look that all is well in Miami, a tougher schedule will surely test the Dolphins in 2009.

I’ve been saying since the end of his freshman season that Michael Crabtree is a can’t miss NFL prospect. He was redshirted his first season, which is what allowed him to become NFL Draft eligible. He took advantage and decided to leave Texas Tech early.

I don’t blame him.

This guy can be the next Larry Fitzgerald. He isn’t as physically overpowering as Fitzgerald but he is a playmaker. He would automatically upgrade any offense. Graham Harrell’s disastrous performance at the Senior Bowl only makes Crabtree look better.

Cincinnati Bengals Draft Needs

David Wellman from Stripe Hype and Fan-Sided Blogs weighs in on who the Bengals should be looking at in the upcoming 2009 NFL Draft.

As one might expect of a team that finished last season 4-11-1, the Cincinnati Bengals are in need of upgrades pretty much across the board. The only exception is quarterback, where a healthy Carson Palmer is by all reports set to return next fall. Here’s a unit-by-unit look.

Offense: The Bengals’ weakest unit is the offensive line. Left tackle Levi Jones hasn’t been completely healthy since early in the 2006 season, right tackle Stacy Andrews tore his ACL in the second-to-last game of 2008 and is a free agent in March, and center Eric Ghiacuic, who consistently struggled against top-tier defensive linemen, isn’t expected to return. The Bengals do have tackle Anthony Collins, a highly regarded junior they stole in the fourth round of the ’08 draft, as well as tackle Andrew Whitworth, a second-round pick in 2006 who has been playing at left guard, so there are some tackle options in-house. Nonetheless, OT is a very strong possibility in the first, where the Bengals have the 6th overall selection. At center, Ghaicuic’s backup is converted guard Dan Santucci, a seventh-round pick in 2007, so a center in the second or third round is a strong possibility as well.

Well when your team goes 2-14, and 5-27 in their last 32 games you have a lot of draft needs. On offense the St. Louis Rams were 31st in scoring with a lowly 14.5 PPG. The Rams were 27th in total yards, 26th in passing, and 25th in rushing. On defense the Rams were 31st in points allowed, 28th in yards allowed, 29th in rushing yards allowed, and 19th in passing yards allowed. So where should we, and where do we start?

Living in the Tuscaloosa area, I have been asked this question many times. Is John Paker Wilson a NFL caliber quarterback?

Every time I hear the question I shake my head in response and I hear scoffs and small chuckles behind me. Wilson was not even a great quarterback at the University of Alabama until this season when he led the Crimson Tide to a undefeated regular season.

Top 10 2009 Senior Bowl Performances

1. QB Pat White – This kid is special. He’s like a mini-Michael Vick with Barry Sanders’ humility. Great kid, even better player. That being said, I’m still not sure he’s an every-down quarterback. What I’m sure he is is Kordell “Slash” Stewart on steroids. I can see him playing receiver in the slot, playing QB in short-yardage situations, being the wildcat for 10 snaps a game. I can envision him becoming the most dangerous and effective utility player ever. I think he could go as high as the second or third round, but that is contingent on his willingness to play receiver and wildcat. Then again, I admire his determination to play the quarterback position. His teammates chose him as captain and he was the game’s MVP. He couldn’t have had a better week.
