Chiefs Fans: Is Tyler Thigpen the answer?
Four weeks ago this was a dumb question and it still may be.
The Chiefs are still not winning but the last two weeks they have been very competitive, including being tied or ahead in the 4th quarter of both games. On Sunday they lost due to a failed two point conversion try and against the Buccaneers they blew a 21 point lead.
Either way, Tyler Thigpen is the reason the Chiefs have improved despite their 1-7 record. In the last three weeks Thigpen has thrown for 6 TDs (0 INTS) and caught a TD.
He’s 66 of 102 for and 710 yards during that stretch, so it’s not like he’s throwing short passes only. Tony Gonzalez even had two touchdowns on Sunday, meaning he is finding a way to get the Chiefs one offensive difference maker involved.
So I’m asking you Chiefs fans, is there still a need to draft a quarterback in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft? I figure a lot of you guys want to take the wait and see approach with Thigpen, but either way his improvement is completely unexpected.
The last three weeks the Chiefs have lost, but only by a combined 8 points. That’s a lot better than the first six games of the season when the Chiefs were only competitive twice.
Thigpen after all is only 24 and in his second year out of Coastal Carolina. So tell me Chiefs fans, what would you do if the draft was tomorrow?
Add Other Thoughts Below!

I’m no Chiefs authority, but I would say that the team should stick with Thigpen and draft another quarterback in the mid-rounds who could come in and play. But that’s just me.
I think we should look at look at a veteran or someone to bring in along with Tyler. I am not sure he is the answer yet and I think bringing someone in like we did with Trent Green might be a great idea!
I think that we could do both, i honestly believe that Croyle and Huard will b gone after this year, and that Quinn gray is only here to bea back up for this year and this year only. I think that the Chiefs will make a strong run at J.P Losman this free agency and will draft a a qb in the third like Cullen Harper, and let the best man win the job, but wither way now you have good depth at the QB and you can hope that one of them is starter material which Tyler Thigpen is oh so trying to do
Draft Bradford out of OK and let Thigpen, Croyle and Bradford fight it out. However, the O line is still a need, as is D line.
Say it with me, WE WANT ANDRE SMITH! Whoever the QB may end up being, they will be able to drop back and throw a…..dare I say….5 step drop from center? Branden Albert is my man and has done an excellent job and can man a different position on the line. Our line used to dominate and with Smith, it would again sooner rather than later. How much better was Cleveland (last year I guess) with Joe Thomas?
Its like this…Thighpen, answer or not, gives us the excuse to stay away from drafting a crappy QB in the 09 draft.
Only if Bradford declares should we consider burning a 1st rounder. The rest of the QB’s are second rate. Also, if Bradford doesnt declare we ride Thighpen to the 2010 draft, even if he has a Derick Anderson 2nd year.
Hope for Tom Brady but plan for Derick Anderson. Thats how I think we should play Thighpen.
Also Losman et all. Sure grab them if you dont have to pay much. Little competition never hurt. I, myself, am keeing an eye on Brian Brohm in Green Bay. Could we get him off waivers next year? How long is that contract we signed? There are plenty of QBs riding the pine in the NFL that are far better and far more ready than what is in this years draft class.
It's so tough to know this early if a QB is the answer. Look at some of the great QBs first few years. Aikman, Manning, Elway etc…. ON AND ON AND ON. Tyler has looked really good, but most NFL organizations are not willing to DEVELOP a QB anymore. They want to win now. I say build around a QB, like Oline and get weapons. Build a solid D. Bring back Marty Ball in a way with a wide open offense. Marty Ball D and Spread Offense. Now that would be fun to watch.
