Adam’s 2008 NFL Mock Draft

2008-04-02, 11:04 PM - Here’s my updated mock. Not too much shake up outside of what I call the Significant Seven.

If Chris Long slides past two, then he will slide all the way to six, barring a trade. Gholsten could even pass him. Malcolm Kelly is slipping because of his knees. Limas Sweed has fallen out of the first round, a la Dwayne Jarrett. Branden Albert is moving up now that teams think he can be a very good tackle, instead of just a guard. Jonathan Stewart holds despite his toe. So does DRC, despite the news about him having only one kidney. He could slip, though, in future installments. Ryan Clady could either rise or fall, it all depends on how important teams view his pathetic score of 13 on the Wonderlic. Chris Williams is rising. No Brian Brohm in this edition, so he’ll be one to watch over the next four weeks.

Stay tuned!

Team 1st Round

Miami Logo

1. Miami Dolphins - OT Jake Long, Michigan

The Tuna starts off his rebuilding project with a different menu item–beef. The player some consider to be the surest bet in the draft goes first, just edging out the other Long, Chris. Knowing the Dolphins extremely well–I used to cover the Fins–I can honestly say that their offensive line is an albatross.

St. Louis Rams Draft Logo 2. St. Louis Rams - DT Glenn Dorsey, LSU

With Glenn Dorsey putting most of the injury issues to bed, he retakes his old spot in the top three of the draft. St. Louis continues to revamp its defense by adding Dorsey to Carriker and Co. The fallout is simple; the defensive ends slide a little, and Sedrick Ellis is now the top defensive tackle.

Atlanta Falcons Draft Logo 3. Atlanta Falcons - QB Matt Ryan, Boston College

Matty Ice likely goes of the board here. With Michael Turner and Roddy White in the fold, the Falcons import Ryan to the ATL to spearhead the “O.” Even if the Falcons decide to pass on Ryan, there is a strong possibility that some other team, say Baltimore, trades up and grabs Ryan here.

Oakland Raiders Draft Logo

4. Oakland Raiders - RB Darren McFadden, Arkansas

While it’s impossible to predict exactly what Al Davis will do here, I think he will end up taking Run DMC. Too much sexy there for him to pass on the former Razorback back. Now, will they be able to keep him from holding out? Who knows?

Kansas City Chiefs Draft Logo

5. Kansas City Chiefs - DT Sedrick Ellis, USC

The Chiefs don’t need a defensive end here, so they go with Sedrick Ellis, who’s every bit as good as Dorsey, sans a little of the hype. Plus, Ellis doesn’t have the injury concerns, whether they are real or not. The Chiefs will also look to trade down here, but with Run DMC and Ryan off the board will find few if any takers.

  1. Looks great! Except for Campbell at 17 and Anthony Collins in Round 1. Calais will struggle against NFL caliber OT because he has no pass rushing moves, he would just bull rush his opponent in college, and it didn’t work that well last season. Collins IMO won’t go in the first round, he looks more like a late 2nd round pick to me.

  2. Thanks, Jason, even though I see your point on Campbell, I still see him going rather high and performing well. As for Collins, there’s no IMO for me–I see him going late first or early second. Actually, most multi-round mocks have him nearly breaking into the first. Having seen him play more than most and seeing him rise while other OTs like Baker and Cherilus are falling, I think he could crack the first round. We shall see.

  3. justin king in the first! hes a third round prospect at best read a fucking book…

  4. Jared, go and read Mel Kiper, genius. His latest mock actually has King going a spot higher than I do (27th). Link: http://insider.espn.go.com/ncf/insider/columns/story?columnist=kiper_jr_mel&id=3275203

I read plenty of books, but you should do your homework before you come on a site and talk smack.

  5. Steelers will go with Albert instead of Williams even if Williams is available. Albert has the ability to play both OT and OG and the stillers need that type of versatility. Besides, Albert is a beast in the run game and Pitt needs to get their identity back on the ground!!!

  6. Waltersfootball, one of the more outstanding mock draft sites, has CB Justin King going in the 3rd. Nuff said. I think your Patriots pick CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Tenn. St. is perfect(i have him there myself).

  7. Thanks, Doug. We know the crew at Walter’s quite well, and they are fantastic, but Kiper is still THE definitive voice when it comes to the NFL Draft. ‘Nuff said.

  8. I have to say that Mel Kiper is way overrated. I can think of about a dozen players in the past couple of years where his judgement of their abilities and their draft ranking was completely off. I mean seriously, remember he had Mike Williams (WR, USC) as the number 1 prospect of the draft and now four years later Mike is out of the league.
Secondly, how can Antoine Cason not be a first round pick? He won the Thrope Award for the nations best DB. He has had a stand out 4 year career at Arizona, being a shut-down corner against the PAC-10’s NFL quality receivers (5 int’s, two returned for a TD, last year alone). Plus, Cason is a great punt and kick return man, possessing 4.45 40 speed and spectacular agility and cut-back ability. How on earth you and Kiper don’t have Cason in the first round I do not know. Come on, you seriously think that Justin King, Brandon Flowers, and Reggie Smith are all better than Thorpe award winner Antoine Cason?

  9. Reggie Smith is a great player, one who can play two positions. I don’t know why everyone is knocking King, I think the guy is a big time prospect. Same with Flowers. As for Cason, he just missed out. I like Cason, but his stock seems to be falling no matter who you ask.

While I agree that Kiper may be a tad overrated, he is human, so he does make some mistakes. He’s still the best in the business. There’s a lot of Mel haters out there hating just to hate. I’d like to see someone do it better.

  10. Wow…that seems a little high for Collins. I like the idea of a young bookend to Staley, though. Appreciate your foresight into their needs…most have Niners taking a WR, which could happen, but Martz is just as big on his OL as his receivers. He can still get a top receiver with their 2nd rd (#39) pick…someone like Doucet or Andre Caldwell could be a terrific slot receiver.

  11. Frank, I think Collins will continue to be a riser. He might not crack the first round, but he has that kind of talent. Think Tony Ugoh. I almost thought about drafting a QB for the Niners, but Martz also doesn’t like spending high picks on QBs. He’s a system guy. Thanks for dropping by…

  12. Justin King? Justin freaking King? Adam….that is embarrassing.

  13. I already cited Kiper agreeing with me, do I need to go find more similar evaluations of King? Man. The damn guru of gurus agrees that the guy is a first rounder and I’m getting this much flak. Whatever–I’m sticking with King where he’s at in this draft. Kid can play.

  14. I doubt the Packers would take Brandon Flowers at #30. Too small. They tend to prefer bigger CBs. Antoine Cason is more their style. As for Mel Kiper and his ability to judge talent. I have to ask you, if he’s (as you put it) “The damn guru of gurus” and “He’s still the best in the business”. Why isn’t he an NFL General Manager?

  15. Justin King in the 1st? He may have speed, but he sure struggled last year in coverage. Mel Kiper may have him going in the 1st, but the majority have King in the 2nd or 3rd. Last year 7 of Kiper’s “projected” 1st rounders dropped into the 2nd and 3rd rounds. So even Kiper isn’t correct 100% of the time.

  16. Mel Kiper makes more money doing what he does for ESPN. I’m sure he’s a multi-millionaire several times over, and he obviously has a ton of influence with GMs. What an asinine, smart ass comment that was, Gremlin. C’mon, man.

Paul, I like what I’ve seen from Flowers, and just wanted to cite that others felt the same way about him being a first rounder. Since Kiper is the most famous draft guru of all I just went ahead and used him and his POV. Agree to disagree, but I’ve never seen a reaction to any player like this. Are you guys capable of forming your own opinion, or do you just think what a few mocks tell you to?

  17. I didn’t say anything about Flowers. I was just questioning King in the 1st. Sorry I’m not a Kiper fan.

  18. Paul, I understand. Sometimes I feel, however, that people just hate on him because he’s the top dog. He does as well as anyone can or will at projecting this crazy crapshoot.
